Lead Approval Criteria

Learn about how we qualify the leads we send you.

To be considered a “lead” on EnergySage, homeowners complete a 13-question registration form and are reviewed through our approval process to ensure they are good candidates for solar.

Our registration form allows us to gather information about the home, the applicant's ownership status, and more. We use this data to evaluate whether or not the property is a good fit for solar and should be approved into our marketplace (see chart below).

Properties with missing or atypical information are subject to further review. In these cases, EnergySage reaches out to the homeowner to get more information about the property, after which, the property may be approved or denied entry into the marketplace.

Leads are distributed to installers only after they’ve been approved.

Lead quality is tracked and audited monthly. All approvals are reviewed and audited manually. Feedback from installers is taken into account to understand trends and guide our criteria for future approvals.

Below are the criteria for EnergySage approvals:

  1. Full street address (#, street, state, zip)

  2. Full first and last name. Real names only. Fake name example: “Solar Shopper”

  3. Email has been validated

  4. Roof is visible in Google/bing image
  5. House is a single-family home
  6. Viable roof space (8 or more panels) or ground space.

  7. Monthly Electric Cost and kWh Average Month info complete. Utility not required.

    1. CA, $75 - $600 monthly

    2. All other, $50 - $600 monthly

    3. Usage over $600 with electric bill is present and confirming usage

  8. Shading is not significant:
    1. Less than or equal to 50% shading
    2. Between 50% and 75% shading, has answered willing to remove trees
  1. Not a duplicate of an existing street address with the same (or similar homeowner name/email)

Below are reasons we may further investigate a lead before approval:

  • Roof image is not available and roof plans are not attached - our team will reach out to obtain roof plans
  • House is a duplex or shared ownership  - our team will reach out for more information
  • House is shaded and the homeowner is not willing to remove trees

Below are the reasons why a lead wouldn't meet EnergySage's qualification criteria. If you receive a lead that falls within at least one of these parameters, notify your PSM.*

  • Mobile homes
  • Roof can’t fit 8+ panels
  • New construction, no roof plans
  • Fake name
  • Only interested in O&M
  • Only interested in Storage
  • Electric bill below $50 (<$75 CA)
  • Same lead received within 3 months
  • 50%+ shaded, unwilling to cut trees
  • Existing array, unwilling to replace or add 8+ panels
  • Isn’t the owner or under contract to own

*If the lead request is a ground mount, the first three bullets are irrelevant.
